It is estimated that about 80% of lung cancer cases among women are caused by smoking. The other cases are the consequence of other lung diseases, exposure to toxins and hereditary factors.

  • Sudden weight loss
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Whistling or chest pain
  • Phlegm or secretions
  • Coughing up blood
  • Bone pain
  • Obstruction of the superior vena cava
  • Frequent episodes of fever and pneumonia

The symptoms of lung cancer vary depending on the patient’s body and the stage of the disease. Some patients have no symptoms. The disease is diagnosed by lung x-rays performed for other reasons.

Although there is no 100% effective way to prevent lung cancer, certain healthy habits can reduce our risk of getting sick. Most smokers already know the risks associated with this addiction. It is up to them to decide whether or not to protect their health.

The most important step we can take to avoid lung cancer is to stop smoking. After 10-15 years of giving up this habit, we will have the same risk of developing lung cancer as a non-smoker.
